It’s almost 2012, so it’s time to look ahead at the new year and propose some resolutions for our community. Many of these are not new, but they are steps that individuals can take to make our community a better place to live. And the best part: They cost very little.
So here’s my Top 10 list:
10 Enjoy our great area. Find a new activity this year by exploring the beach, wandering through our parks, going to a museum, buying tickets to a theater production, learning to swim, cleaning up a playground or giving a ride to a neighbor.
9 Pay it forward. You never know when you will need help, so be the one who helps first. Get involved with your church, synagogue, neighborhood association, community center or whatever makes you feel energized. Give away a bit of yourself by giving the gift of time.
Be A Mentor is grateful to Bill Heinauer and Glasspro for the sponsorship of Be A Mentor during National Mentoring Month. Glasspro chose BAM as the recipient of the 3 Degree Guarantee for the month on January on News 2! Because Rob Fowler was able to correctly predict the temperature within 3 degrees on 19 days in January, Be A Mentor received a check from Glasspro for $1900! Thank you Channel 2 and Glasspro for the much-needed publicity and the funding! Be A Mentor was able to recruit over 100 mentors in January thanks to this promotion!
Be A Mentor was recently honored at Chicora Elementary School’s volunteer and mentor appreciation night. The students presented Be A Mentor with a certificate thanking us for the mentors we’ve referred in the 2010-2011 school year. The students performed a Spring Concert to thank their Lunch Buddies, Communications Mentors, and Volunteers.
Be A Mentor helps to recruit mentors and connect them with Charleston's youth. We recruit mentors for many organizations throughout the Lowcountry as well as for our own programs.
